FACE TO FACE
Matthew Jordan Smith He takes nothing for granted, but indeed he searches for everything that brings liveliness, beauty and character to the surface. Some of the most famous personalities of American entertainment relied on his sensitivity and talent to be portrayed: among them are Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Oprah Winfrey, Angela Basset, Vanessa Williams, Star Jones Reynolds and Michael Jordan, to name but a few. He realized commercial photographs for L’Oreal, Pantene, Revlon; HBO and Showtime. Two international giants such as Eastman Kodak Company and Microsoft Corporation have named him, among few others, as an icon of imaging.
Professional photographer, he is sought after not only for the quality he is able to achieve, but also for his discreet and relaxed approach. He is a man of a strong aesthetic sense coupled with a particular communicative skill. He has taught at the School of Visual Art in Manhattan and hold classes at workshops in Santa Fe. To his students he has taught to photograph first of all what they love. Along with more “commercial” work commitments, Jordan Smith has also developed some more personal studies, from which were born some volumes. One of these is “Sepia Dreams”, a collection of portraits and interviews to some fifty Afro-American people. Another one is “Lost and Found”, sponsored by the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children; it is an inquiry dedicated to those families who have been through the shocking experience of the kidnapping of their child. He is currently working on a third book, a photographic journey in the art of motion, with about one hundred subjects from the Hollywood star to the girl next door. He quoted in an interview (inconsonline) that he decided to become a photographer after reading a book about Gordon Parks, an emblematic character of the Twentieth century American photography. Although in an all-different context as are the modern times, Smith hasn't forgotten the lesson...
